HC grants interim protection to Aroop Biswas in 'attempt to murder' case

The Calcutta High Court has granted interim protection to former West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas in connection with an attempt to murder case. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya directed that the court must be informed immediately if the police intend to take any coercive action against him. The case stems from a complaint filed by a lawyer at the Alipore Police Station, who alleged that an attempt was made on his life for fighting a legal case against Swarup Biswas, the brother of the former sports minister.

During the hearing, senior advocate Kishore Datta raised concerns about the safety of accused individuals within the court premises. He alleged that incidents of violence, including egg-pelting and physical assaults on accused persons, are taking place openly in the presence of law enforcement authorities. Datta questioned why individuals are subjected to such beatings while in police custody, arguing that it interferes with the administration of justice.

In response to these arguments, Justice Bhattacharya strongly criticized the public humiliation of individuals under investigation, stating that the practice of walking accused persons with a rope tied around their waists must be stopped. The court also ordered the preservation of the CCTV footage recorded on the day of the alleged harassment incident. The High Court has scheduled the next hearing of the matter for July 23 to further examine the case details.
